Katie had a hard night after her surgery. She was awake every 1 to 1 1/2 hours either because of pain or having to go pee. We weren't able to get her on a schedule that she would do both at the same time. Needless to say, mommy didn't get a lot of sleep. She also asked me to sleep in her bed after the first time she got up. We were watching TV at 6 in the morning when we got a pleasant surprise from Dr. Welch. We weren't suppose to see him until Monday, but he decided to stop in and see Katie before he head to the other clinic he works at. He said he was to excited and wanted to see it before Monday. The picture below is her new ear. It looks so much better then I was expecting it to. The first surgery was to care the other aspect of the ear lobe. As you saw in the previous post what her little ear looked like. Even though it is flat against her head and kinda budging, seeing the curvation was awesome. The next two surgeries will do more shaping and pulling the ear out more, he will also fix her lobe where it ripped from her ear piercing.
Today was a hard day for her, she was restless and having a lot more pain. We order breakfast which is a great thing, this hospital don't give you meal trays at a certain time. When you are hungery between the hours of 6:30 to 6:30, you look at a big menu and call and place an order. Katie had scrambled egges, fruit loops for breakfast, she went about 38 hours without food and was very much ready to eat. After breakfast she got the IV discontinue (she has the hep lock in still) We took a walk around the unit and then got a w/c and I took her on an hour long ride through the hospital with a stop at the gift shop. We came back and she was wiped out and in pain. The pain meds she gets hold her for about 3 to 3 1/2 hours, so the last 1/2 hour to hour, she is in a lot pain to the point she shed some tears. She did take a nap this afternoon. My mom came and visit while she was napping. I took some cat naps while Katie and I watched endless tv together on the bed. Her dad came right after work, we were not in the room when he arrived as we venture out again, this time it was short since she is uncomfortable. She has been a little tonight, but she doesn't want to go to sleep she also doesn't want to get out of bed, so we have been just trying to comfort her when she gets a little edgy. She really hates the "bubble" dressing on her ear, it bothers her a lot. She is going to have to keep it on until Monday. She also has a drain from the ear and rib incision. Tonight for supper we all got pizza, grapes, carrots, cookies and beverages from the Minne*tonka HS football team, so that was nice. Katie ate a little bit, but isn't eating much since breakfast due to stomach hurting. She denies that she is going to throw up, we have been giving her meds to help her with that. She has been enjoying the unlimited popiscles and water, we have offer her other beverages, but she is sticking with water.
Dave and I learned tonight that you don't unplug the call light/tv controller from the wall. We had unplugged it for a second to untangle some of the cords, We had a bunch of nurses fly in here so fast, they said it came up as a code, Thank you God that it wasn't a code.
Praise the Lord that so far this was a very successful surgery, I am happy with the ear, I didn't have high expections as I have seen pictures of other people who have had the surgery and it not look as good as Katie. I know her ear has a long ways to go, but it on an excellent start. The other 2 surgeons who examine the ear at different times, both said they won't touch the dressings (they examine the ear and I asked if they would change the dressing as Katie is complaining it itching and it is moist), that Dr. Welch is very particular with his incisions and surgeries, they reassured me that he knows the best and so forth, which I totally believe.
My mom and sister have been awesome helping me out with the girls at home. My sister has been taking Erin to her speech therpy and helping her with her homework. My mom has been getting the girls on and off the bus and to places they need to go and taking care of them so I can focus on Katie. Jenny and Monika complain they miss me, so they have taken to sleeping in my bed togheter. Erin hasn't said much about the surgery or me being gone, which doesn't surprise me at all.
