She is perfect just the way she is...but...

My precious Katie.
You have such a beautiful, infectionous smile
You are so kind hearted
You have so much to give
You are the ray of sunshine
You are always ready with a smile
When you got your ear pierced, you were so proud.  You changed your earrings all the time.
When your right ear ripped and you couldn't wear a earring in that ear you were said.
You developed scar tissue where it ripped, it allowed you to get your ear picture again.
When you were taken to Claires to have it pierced again, you were so happy

We never thought your special little ear could have an earring in it.  We were so sad the first time it "ripped",  but so happy that you could have it pierced again.

Just recently her ear ripped on it's own and this time the scar tissue isn't developing.  She is so sadden about this and has asked repeatly to have surgery on her little ear, to make it big like her other ear.  When asked why she wants the surgery, she keeps saying because she doesn't like her ear looking like a fish and she wants to have earrings in it.
Before we brought Katie and Jenny home, Dave and I had decided that we were going to have surgery on their ears as soon as possible to "fix" the deformity.  Once home, Dave and I have had a change of heart.  We wanted to wait until they were older and could make their own decisions about it.  There was different options and we wanted the to be able to decide since they had to live with it.  We had decided that if they got teased or it created a lot of problems we would do it sooner or later.  We have been very lucky as the girls haven't got teased or anything and have been very open with it.  We have taught them it nothing to be ashamed or shy about it, It has helped that I have a hearing loss and their friends have asked me many times about my hearing aides and I talk about it very postive and open.  They have been taught that this is how God created them just like my hearing loss.  They wear their hair up all the time.  Since the ear ripped on it's own (I think the tissue in that ear is strong, Jenny has no problem with her little ear and earrings.  My girls don't wear hooped or dangling earrings so I don't believe it is due to weight of the earring) this time, Katie has been asking very frequently to have the surgery, she keeps saying she wants to have a big ear so she can have earring again in that ear.  Dave and I have been having a lot of talks about this, trying to figure out if we should let her have the surgery for that reason, or do we make her wait until she can understand better what it all entitles.  She will have to give up gymnastic for a period of time, she will have to be careful not to get bummed in the head (which will be hard as she is clumsy at times).  We also need to decide if Katie does have the surgery, will Jenny have it at the same time?  Dave and I orginally were going to have the girls have it at the same time, so that if one of them have a bad time with it, it won't scare the other one.  I have been doing a lot of soul searching on this,  this isn't a life threatening issue, she can live physically with a little ear.  Emotionally it is starting to take a toll on her as she is get wanting to wear earring in that ear, that she becoming self conscious of it and how it looks now with the rip in it.  As we discuss it, the main question that comes up:  do we let her have it because of wanting a earring in it, or do we work with her and have her wait until she is older and have a better understanding of it all intitled.

  1. Sue, let me know if she ever wants to come over and talk to Hayden since they are close to the same age. Hayden chose to have eye surgery this spring rather than have to wear a patch again. Last week she said she was glad that she had the surgery, even though it hurt and she could not run, play or swim for a while. Because of all of her other surgeries, Hayden knew what to expect with the pain etc. However, she does have a lot of scars on her back and up/down her legs that she wants covered when she is in a swim suit as she is getting self conscious about them so she would understand how Katie feels.

  2. I think I would let her have the surgery. It is hard being a girl and we can be very self conscious. Maybe see if both want it or if not, just let the one have the surgery. My littlest has a very slightly deformed ear and we will fix it if she asks as she gets older.
