Erin
Dave and I took Erin shopping for her school supplies today as she is starting school tomorrow morning. Once we finished that, we headed over to the U of M pediactic Audiologist Clinic. Erin wasn't that thrilled as she was tired today and I think getting tired of all the appointments. When we arrived at the clinic our ASL interpret was already there. They had asked me me with I talked with them on Monday if we wanted one, we felt it would be better because then I could focus on the audiologist (Jennifer) and not have to try to sign at the same time. This is the first time I have ever had an interpreter and I am not sure what it all involved. This interpreter only interpreter when it pertains to Erin ears, if something else was said that wasn't related to her ears, she didn't interpt, so I need to ask my deaf friends if that is how it is. I wasn't signing to Erin unless she wasn't understanding the interpreter because I didn't want to confuse her. So Jennifer did the test and got close to the same results as the first audiologist did, but Erin had a little bit of better hearing on this test then the first one. What I really liked about this audiologist, she explained what exactly Erin hearing loss which is severe to profound hearing loss (we couldn't get the other one to say that specifically although we figure that is what she had). She then went on to explain what the possibility of hearing aides might do for Erin, she was very honest and said they might not work, or they might work a little bit or a lot. Some of it will depend how her ears reacts to the stimulus of the noise whether it can understand what it is hearing or not. She pretty much told us that is what it all depends on. She then went on saying they have a great partnership with the Lions Club that they will loan us hearing airds for 6 months to see if Erin likes it or not. This is will allow us to get a better idea what we are looking at. It allows us 6 months to get all the money for hearing aides if we end of purchasing them. She also explained that what the paper show of her hearing loss is close to the same in both eithers, that it is like our dominant writing hand or dominant throwing hand, people usually have a dominant ear, the one that they will more then likely listen on the phone with or say they can hear better out of it, so that help us understand better why she always say the right and the fact she did have hearing aid in that ear at one point of time, she heard out of that ear and knows what the it sounds like, she probably thinks everything comes from that ear, it made a lot of sense to us. She also spoke about cochlear implants, she said it isn't a straight no, that it might or might not work and we wouldn't know until after we tried hearing airds. It will totally be up to Erin if she wants a cochlear implants or not. Then she said Erin to pick out her colors of earmolds and showed her some examples. Well it was pink and white that she picked. She was happier when we left then before we got there. Once finished we headed over to Dave's parents and introduced her to his dad, his dad forgot about not approaching and huggin her right off the bat, she got scared and I think wasn't prepared for him to hug her. We then came home and met with our social worker Jill from our homestudy agency which went great. We had ham for supper and Erin could not get enough of it as long as it was hot, we had to keep warming up pieces of ham in the microwave as the ham had cooled off sitting at the table. We made her try one home grown bean which she did not like, but she at the whole bean. We then headed out to the younger girls school roller skating party. Erin wasn't not thrill at all, but Dave also rollerskated as I stayed on the side lines because I came down with a cold. She went around a couple times, fell, let Dave help her up and hold her hand (got no pictures of that, they came out blurrry), she then sat out because her arm is sore from the Wii last night. Monika coaxed her out again and was with her for a little bit, and then Erin started to skate by herself away from the wall. She had a lot of fun, as all the girls and their 2 cousins that were there. Monika was proudly introducing Erin to all of her friends.
